The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, Founding Co-Director of Social Security Works, in response to Hillary Clinton calling for expanding Social Security benefits in today’s economic policy speech:
“In today’s speech, Hillary Clinton made it clear that expanding Social Security benefits is a cornerstone of her economic agenda. This is both profoundly wise policy and smart politics. I am very pleased that both the Democratic Party platform and the Party’s standard bearer, Secretary Clinton, reject all cuts to Social Security’s modest benefits. Instead, they wisely support expanding benefits as a key solution to a number of challenges facing our nation, including rising inequality and the looming retirement income crisis.
This stands in stark contrast to Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Both Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, have a history of supporting policies that would cut and dismantle Social Security, including raising the retirement age and privatization. The 2016 Republican Platform also supports these destructive policies. Given that Social Security is a key part of Americans’ basic economic security, it is disturbing that it was entirely absent from Trump’s speech on the economy last week. It was likely omitted because voters of all political affiliations, unlike Trump and other GOP political leaders, overwhelmingly oppose Social Security cuts and support expanding benefits.”
